PSA has been one of City Year’s research partners for more than 15 years, using quasi-experimental research designs for multiple studies of City Year and its Whole School Whole Child (WSWC) model for national, New York City, and Los Angeles City Year clients.
In 2015, PSA assessed the impacts of the WSWC model on the performance of the 242 schools that have partnered with City Year in 25 cities in 18 states. The evaluation used a comparison group design, cross-state, multi-level Difference-in-Difference and within-state linear regression models to assess whether City Year has an effect on the performance of its partner schools, as measured by student test scores, attendance rates, and, where available, indicators of school climate.
In previous studies, PSA conducted a comparison of alumni outcomes to a statistically matched comparison group selected from a national dataset using joint regression analysis, and we used hierarchical linear modeling to compare participating students’ performance on the New York state assessment of ELA to that of a matched comparison group of students from similar schools that did not implement the WSWC model.
